Why you might need Level 2 work

Most Sydney properties end up needing Level 2 work for one of these reasons.

  • A defect notice from the network

Inspectors flag things like a loose point of attachment or a damaged meter panel, and the notice comes with a deadline.

  • Storm and tree damage

A falling branch can rip the line off the house. A Level 2 provider must repair your side before reconnection.

  • Going from single phase to three phase

Ducted air and an EV charger together can outgrow single phase. Upgrading means new mains, new service fuses and a metering change.

  • New builds and knockdown rebuilds

Demolition can't start until the old supply is disconnected. The builder then runs on temporary power until the permanent connection goes in.

  • Old consumer mains

Decades-old mains can have perished insulation or be too small for today's load. Replacing them means isolating at the pole or pit.

  • A line that is now in the way

Add a second storey or a carport and the overhead line may end up too low. Moving it is Level 2 work.

How we handle a Level 2 job

Network work takes more steps than an indoor job, mostly because the distributor needs to know.

  1. Look at the site and the paperwork

We check the service line or pit, mains, meter box and any defect notice or connection offer, then give you one fixed price.

  2. Sort out the network side

New supplies, connection changes and three phase upgrades need an application to Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy. Meter changes go through your retailer's metering provider.

  3. Plan the power-off

Most jobs need the supply off for part of the day. We tell you when, so you can plan around fridges or medical equipment.

  4. Isolate and prove it dead

We isolate at the pole, pit or service fuse and test it dead before anyone touches a conductor.

  5. Do the work

The new line, mains or meter panel goes in to AS/NZS 3000 and the Service and Installation Rules of NSW.

  6. Test, energise and certify

We test insulation resistance, polarity and earthing, then energise. The CCEW goes to Building Commission NSW and the network gets its notice.

Signs you need a Level 2 electrician

Five of these can wait a week, but three cannot.

  • You got a defect letter from Ausgrid or Endeavour

The deadline is on it, so book the fix well before it falls due.

  • The line to the house is down or low Ring now

Treat it as live. Stay at least 8 metres away and call 000.

  • Sparks or crackling where the line meets the house Ring now

That is a fire and shock risk. Call the network emergency line, then us.

  • A tap or wet metal gives you a tingle Ring now

It can mean a broken neutral. Stop using water and ring the network emergency line now.

  • The wall bracket is rusted or pulling away

It holds the weight of the line and only gets worse in a storm.

  • Lights dim hard when the air con starts

You may have undersized mains or a high resistance joint, so check before adding load.

  • You want an EV charger on single phase

We work out whether your supply copes or a three phase upgrade makes more sense.

  • You're building, knocking down or adding a granny flat

The disconnection and new connection both need lead time with the network, so start early.

For urgent items, call Ausgrid 13 13 88 or Endeavour Energy 131 003, then us on 0449 154 812.

Finding an electrician in Sydney who turns up

The hardest part of getting electrical work done in Sydney is not the work. It is finding someone who shows up when they said they would, tells you the price before they start, and does not leave you chasing them for a certificate afterwards.

Sydney is inside our normal run, as are Sydenham, Sydney, Sydney Olympic Park. We quote the whole job as one number before we start, and we do not charge to come and look at it.

What makes Sydney different to work in

Sydney has the mix you find across a lot of Sydney: older homes still running the board they were built with, sitting next to places that have been renovated two or three times. Both throw up their own problems, and both are jobs we do every week.

Older wiring around Sydney was never designed for the load a modern kitchen puts on it. Add an induction cooktop or a second fridge and the weak point shows up quickly.

When you need a Level 2 electrician in Sydney

A normal electrician cannot legally touch the part of your supply that belongs to the network. Anything from the street to your meter, the service line, the point of attachment, the metering itself, needs an accredited Level 2 service provider. That is a separate accreditation, not just experience.

The usual triggers around Sydney: your overhead service line has come down or is sagging, you are upgrading from single to three phase, you need a new meter installed or moved, you have had a defect notice from the network, or your consumer mains are too small for what the house now draws.

If you have been told you need your mains upgraded before a switchboard job can go ahead, that is Level 2 work, and it is usually cheaper to do both at once than to bring two crews out.

What usually causes it around Sydney

Age is the biggest single factor. Wiring installed decades ago was sized for a very different household, and insulation on older cable gets brittle and cracks, particularly in roof spaces that heat up through summer.

Storms take a toll, especially on anything overhead. A surge through the supply can quietly damage a board or an appliance and the symptoms show up weeks later.

What level 2 electrician costs in Sydney

We do not publish a price for this, and you should be careful of anyone who does. Two houses in Sydney on the same street can need very different work depending on the age of the wiring and what has been added to it over the years.

What we can promise is the shape of it. We come out and look for nothing, we work out what the job actually needs, and we give you one fixed number for the whole thing. If we find something unexpected once we are into it, we stop and talk to you rather than adding it to the bill. The number you agreed is the number on the invoice.

How we work compared to an hourly rate

An hourly rate puts the risk on you. Every delay, every trip back to the van, every part that turns out to be the wrong one lands on your invoice. That is the opposite of what most people in Sydney actually want, which is to know the number before they say yes.

We price the job, not the time. That means we carry the risk of it taking longer, which is a good incentive for us to turn up prepared. It also means you can say yes or no with the full number in front of you.

What you can safely do yourself

Almost nothing, and that is not us protecting our own work. In New South Wales it is against the law for an unlicensed person to do fixed electrical wiring, and the insurance consequences of a fire traced back to unlicensed work are severe. Replacing a plug top on an appliance or changing a lamp is fine. Anything behind the wall or inside the board is not.

Before you call, switch off the appliance you suspect and see whether the problem goes away. If the board holds with that one thing unplugged, you have found it, and the visit gets much shorter.

Renting in Sydney, or managing a building?

If you rent, electrical repairs to the property itself are the owner's responsibility, and urgent electrical faults fall under urgent repairs in New South Wales. Talk to your agent first. If it is genuinely dangerous, say so clearly, because that changes how quickly it has to be dealt with.

If you manage a strata block around Sydney, we can work on common property and bill the body corporate directly, and we can keep the same electrician on your building so nobody is relearning the site every visit.
